Today, I didn't go to school right away. In fact, I didn't go to school til 9:20 and it started at 7:45! The reason was because I had a dental appointment. I got a new wire on my bottom braces. After school, Nick Menudier and I were picked up by dad and we went bowling! I beat A.S. 124-55, 93-68, and 79-62. My average is now 104. So ends the first month of my first diary.

Today, school was a bore. (as usual) Nick Menudier (Ace Schmendrick) is going bowling with me and dad tomorrow. (Dad still isn't able to bowl because of his leg) I had a whole bunch of homework, so I didn't play with the kids. I stayed in and read some of my book, "Jungle Tales of Tarzan." (Since I finished Bombay Boomerang) At night, I did my (hard) math homework, and studied (hard) for my (hard) Health Examination.

I was a huge fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs and read most of his Tarzan series of books.

Nothing happened today. It was just a day of rest. We did have a Magic Club meeting. we now have $2.90 in the treasury. When we get $6.00, we will send away for some magic tricks. I also watched a movie called, "Legend of Hell House." I saw it before when I was 7 years old, and I understood it much better this time.

***

But I'll tell you what I remember from the time I saw it when I was 7 years old: a possessed woman dropping her robe and ordering a man to make love to her. It was the first scene of "that sort" I'd ever watched. You can bet I was waiting for that moment when I watched it the second time.

A day of rest? Well, it was a Sunday.

Today, (or rather this morning) I went to Junior League Bowling. My partner wasn't there, so I bowled alone. I got an 87, 132, and a 111. My average is 110. Afterwards, I went to Paul Revere so I could go to see the Harlem Globetrotters play. (I had joined a club called Ex-Pro, and It was one of the activities.) Meadowlark Lemon was not at his best. He tried for his 50-footer 8 times, and missed every time. When I got back, I took a shower and went to bed.

Today, at school, I decided against going steady with Laura. But she wasn't to upset. She invited me to go miniature golfing tonight with the Westside YMCA. I thought that would be fun, so I accepted. When we got there we were only given an hour to play and we didn't even get to finish 14 holes. I won with a score of 48, or something like that. On the way home we stopped at Swensens for some Ice Cream. I got lime sherbert. On the way home, Laura tried kissing me, but I wasn't in the mood, so I didn't kiss her.

Today, In Math, we had a semester exam, and this time, I think I did pretty well. I only had 5 problems I didn't understand. During Library practice, (per. 4) I was called into Mr. Bell, our counselor. He gave me a ton of booklets to study for a Health Exam. Tonight, Laura called me up, and (of all things) asked if I would go steady with her. I told her I'd have to think about that. I still don't know if I want to or not.

Today, school was pretty boring. Same old classes, same old stuff. Except that I did start a new project after I finished mother's hanging planter. (in metal) I started a garden trowel. I also had an oboe lesson when I got home. Lou Bussel taught me a whole bunch of notes. He also makes his own oboe reeds, and showed me the process of making one. He says that someday, I'll be making my own reeds.

Everything was perfect today at school. I even solved a math problem on the board. I also got a new locker today. Instead of 269, I have 196. The reason for this is that yesterday my gym clothes were stolen. Today, I found out someone put them back in my gym locker! When I got home, I went bowling. I bowled 88, 109, 132, 98, and 109. My average is now 104.

Today was just a school day, nothing special, except that I had about a ton of homework. Everyone was questioning me about what happened last night with Laura and I, and I told them that what happened last night was none of their business. I'm starting to get real good on the oboe notes that Mr. Bussell gave me. I can almost do a chromatic scale from C to C, except for C#, D#, and E#. He hasn't taught me those notes yet.

Even though I was only 12, my musical training on clarinet was far enough along that I should have known E# is actually an F.

Today, Mom, Dad, Laura and I went to go see the opera version of "Cinderella." It was pretty interesting, and different because instead of having a wicked stepmother, she has a wicked stepfather. Then, before we left, we had dinner at the "Railroader", where everything was lousy except the food. On the way back, we listened to "Dr. Demento." Right before we dropped Laura off, we kissed goodnight, and she left.

***

Can't you just feel the passion?

The Railroader was a small chain of restaurants in southern California in the 1970s. It was, by far, my favorite place to eat. Each restaurant consisted of an actual (but "dry-docked") railway dining car, where people were served their burger-oriented food, and a connected actual caboose, which served as a waiting room (and jungle-gym). The waitresses wore "engineer" uniforms, except modified to wear shorts. Kids received hats like the paper crowns one gets at Burger King—except instead of a crown the hat looked like a train engineer's cap.

Remarkably, there is nothing—NOTHING—about the Railroader chain on the Internet. Not even a photograph. If anyone else remembers this place, I'd love to hear about it.

"Nothing Much Else Happened:" Presenting the Diary of A 12-Year-Old

This may be a huge mistake.

But what the heck, the new year is a time for experimenting, right?

About a month ago, while going through some old college files in a box, I discovered a small, beat-up book with the simple word "Diary" on the front. Oh, and a sticker on it that read "One Year." In case the user of the diary was unclear on the concept of the diary. It had a clasp with a lock on it, they key long lost, but thankfully the clasp unlocked. I recognized it immediately, of course: it was my own diary, my first diary, from 1978, when I was 12-going-on-13 years old.

I thumbed through, randomly reading entries, remembering how banal my life in Pacific Palisades was. But something about its ... how do you say ... authenticity struck me. The writing was almost completely without ornament; about the most emotional I would get is marking particularly enjoyable days with a star and the carefully scripted words "Highlight Day" above the day's date. This was a very straightforward document of a year in a circa-1970s 12-year-old's life. He had a girlfriend (at least for part of the year), but considering what a blathering romantic he grew up to be, any dramatic emotion for said girlfriend was notably absent, at least on the page. He played a lot of instruments, lived for amusement parks and baseball, and worshipped his older brothers.

And then I had a thought ... one of those thoughts that might have been better not having been thunk: What if I put this diary up on the blog? Day by day, throughout 2010, I would post the page of text I scribbled as I lay in my bed. (The diary's format was one page per day, thankfully limiting my ability to describe each day.)

I made mention of this idea at the end of a long post here in mid-November, and I got a couple of positive "do it!" comments over on Facebook. But since then, I've gone back and forth on thinking this was either a potentially valuable document of a 12-year-old's life, or a horrible idea that will make family and friends realize that I was as utterly dull in 1978 as I am in 2010.

But I've decided to give it a shot and see how it goes over. Some will read this, I'm sure, and think: Oh my god, he was that way even before he was a teenager? Most of you, I'm sure, will yawn.

But I'll give it a month or so and see how it goes. If nothing else, the Internet will have a thorough, day-by-day document of a southern California kid's life in the 1970s. And I'll be utterly humiliated. It's a win-win!

Here goes nothing. Literally.
