Nothing Much Else Happened: September 30, 1978

Today I bowled a little bit worse than last Saturday. We began a new league today, and my partner is Craig McEachren, who can't bowl worth ❚❚❚❚ ! ! ! He bowled a beautiful 72, a fantastic 95, and a fabulous 102! While I hung in there with a 132, a 104 and a 118. Somehow, we split the games with the other team, 2-2. I doubt we'll do very good since we're both pretty bad bowlers compared to the other teams.

Today was my clarinet lesson, we worked on a new — and probably the hardest piece I have ever attempted to play. It is called "Arpeggios". No, it's not an exercise, it's a full piece. But the whole thing, or practically the whole thing is made up of 32nd notes. Compared to this, advanced band is like learning how to push a button. By the way, speaking of Advanced band, we will have a concert coming up in November the ? I've forgotten the date.

Today in Drama, Mrs. Mullin asked me if I could do an individual mime category for the Drama Festival. Wait a minute. Let me explain. Every year there is a Drama festival held at one of the Junior High schools in Los Angeles. There are different categories of Drama and last year I did an individual mime, and got to the semi-finals. This year I hope to be more successful — maybe get a trophy!

Today was the beginning of my preparation for a guitar recital coming up in one month from Friday (Oct. 29). I'm planning on doing My Spanish piece, "Malaguena", and one other song, which I have no idea what it's going to be. I've narrowed it down to about 5 songs now. The recital is going to be out in Northridge, wherever that is. Sean called me up tonight and said he finally has our business cards that have our names on them. I'll be getting mine on Saturday.

Today was clean-up day. (Don't ask me why, it just was). After our new maid, Maria, showed up and cleaned up the whole house — doing a pretty good job — I went out armed with a hose, some Glass Plus®, some Fantastick®, and some soapy water and conquered the Dodge Aspen. It looks much cleaner now. Not only that, butso does my pocket! I now have about $4.15 to spend on magic tricks on Saturday.

Today let me tell you about the new play Dad is acting/directing. He will be playing Jonathan Brewster and directing the great play (and one of my favorites) "Arsenic and Old Lace". We did the show when we were up in Idyllwild, and it was such a success, we decided we would do it again. Auditions will be on October 1st and 2nd. I'm sure since many people know this play, alot of people will show up and we will have an excellent cast.

Today, Sean (who spent the night over and I started out the great day by coming out to the bowling alley and watching me bowl. Today was Sweepstakes day, and I didn't bowl good enough to get any prizes. I had a 107, a 113 and a 130. (I've had better days) Next, after coming home, Sean got into our outfit and went across the street to do a . . . . . magic show! They loved it! (It was Neil Bailord's birthday party) We made only $8, but I know it's the start of something big!

Today was my clarinet lesson. I have my old teacher, Mr. McMullen, and I am working out of what he calls the "bible of clarinets." The music book is H. Klose, and it begins with the beginners of clarineting, and goes all the way down to the most advanced. It would normally take a beginner about 5 years to get all the way through the book, but since I've been playing for a while, I'm already at the 3-year level. There is also a rumor going around that I may get a new wood clarinet for Christmas.

Today let me tell you about Advanced Band. (Alright! Who was the dummy who just said I couldn't!) Advanced Band is not as good as last year, though it is slowly progressing. Our best song — and it's not that good — is called "Jingle Bells fantasy". It starts out as a normal Jingle Bells, and then about half way through it breaks into a waltz. Toward the ending it turns into a tango, and the last two lines are rock — and the whole thing is Jingle Bells! Tomorrow we will have tryouts.

Today was my guitar lesson. I started last Wednesday and am going full throttle, now. Jean has changed me over to classical, so now I'm working in a book I was working in when I was 9 and 10. I took classical for one year, and then decided I would stop, and maybe go back at a later date. Well, here I am again, working my way up towards a song called "Malaguena", and a song called "Greensleeves".

Today after school, I went down to the beach with some of my friends, David Lewin, Michael Rockwell and Mike Lasher. I brought my boogie board down (and so did everyone else), so we had a ball. I learned how to really boogie well. We plan to do this about 3 times a week, and just have a ball. If there's anything I like more in the afternoon, it hasn't been found yet. But I think we are going to have a problem with transportation.

Today was my first day of service. Mr. Bell mainly wants me to work for him, but I doubt that (and he doubts that) that's the way it will stay that way. I mainly run summons for everybody all around the campus, and I love it. I also do filing and change-of-programs. And, every once-in-a-blue-moon I'll answer the phone. If it gets too crowded in this period, they'll have to switch me around to another period.

Today in Sunday School we had a substitute teacher: Mr. Jasper Thompson. I've told you about him before. He's one of the neatest guys I ever met. He's always telling us stories about his job as a chaplain. I thought it was interesting that so many poeple in prisons and in jails could be so interested in Christian Science. Well, we got our first job as magicians, Sean and I. Next Saturday, at Neil Bailord's birthday party, we will be performing a magic show. Our name is M.A.G.I.C. We don't know what it stands for yet.

Today was the first day (for me) for Junior League Bowling in over 4 months. I bowled alright with a 105, a 125, and a 130. I bowled with my old partner, John Derby, and he seemed to be better than he was last year. After bowling, I walked over to Sean's Dad's place, where I met Sean who had just gotten out of bed — at 11:00 A.M.! Well, we went down to the "Magic Palace" and I bought two tricks: The "guillotine" and the "Silk Serenade".

Today my mom drove me to school, because she had to have a conference with Mr. Bell, my counselor. I listened in as my mom and Mr. Bell talked. The counselor said that there will be no chance of sending me out of the room every time we started talking about diseases. The class would be talking about them all through the ten weeks. So, my mom thought it better that I get out of Science for the first ten weeks, and have service workers. Then after the 10-week progress report go back to Science again.

(That was because of the blue laws of Christian Science.) So, my mom's going to have a conference with my science teacher, Mrs. Wechsler, to see if I should get out of these first ten weeks and get in to service workers, who are the people who take summons' around, do filing and answer phone.

Today, to me, was very much like the calm before the storm. Tomorrow school starts. So, I did absolutely nothing for the whole day except sit around, and "weep". I never got around to getting fully dressed. I asked if Sean wanted to go to the beach, but, no. So, Dad brought me out to the Bay pharmacy and I bought my school supplies: a good notebook, 12 pencils, 2 pens, 1 correcting-red pen, Liquid paper and a pouch that held all that. I already had a paper.

Today, since nothing special happened today, I'll tell you what I would of told you yesterday. I have decided that since school is starting, I would start Junior League Bowling again. I love bowling, and I love the competition — even if I do come in last place. So I bowled with my old partner, John Derby. I bowled pretty good, considering I haven't bowled for about 5 months. John had an average of 110 for the day, and my average was only slightly higher — 120. My three games were 105, 125, and 130.

Today I will continue the story of Sean. We did magic together for about a year, then when I moved to Pacific Palisades, I stopped. Fortuneately, he kept going. By the time he moved down here, he was twice as good as me. He moved down about 3 weeks ago because if he stayed up there, he would of had to have a 45 minute busride down to the Junior High School. Here, he only has to walk about 6 blocks. I'm glad he moved down because now he is my best friend.

Today one of my old friends, Sean McCrae, called me up. He's been my friend since 1974, when we began magic. In '75, we did our first performance — for some second graders. They loved it! Next week, I was already working on my next trick and probably my best. I would hang from our staircase and get out of a chain, some rope, and two jackets, one backwards. I did it in about 45 seconds. But we never got around to do it for an audience. Well, anyway, he's moved down here, and we're gonna start our magic again.

I'm hoping to do much better academically (did I spell that right?), and end up with at least 3 a's and 3 b's (last year I had 2 a's, 3 b's and a C). Tonight we went to see a crazy show called "Bullshot Crummond." Bullshot Crummond was a take-off on that other detective — I forget his name. Today was nice. Probably one of my favorites — but not good enough to be a highlight day. After having breakfast at Bob's father's bakery (and got stuffed), I was dropped off at Bob's house. I promptly got directions to Tina's house. I quickly took off for her house, and decided I would try a shortcut. I encountered a big friendly black dog. I walked a little farther and met a very small mean dog. After passing him I decided I wouldn't take the shortcut. I turned around and there was the mean dog with a black mean dog. Help! I got away, finally, and got to Tina's house. Best looking girl I ever saw!

Today, we went to the beach about 3:30 P.M. Bob and I spent most of the time in the water. Not only did we "boogie" and body surf, but we also played football and frisbee. Bob can't swim very well, so we stay pretty much in the shallow end. He's a great frisbee thrower, though. For dinner we had Kentucky Fried Chicken, and for dessert we had some mixed fresh fruit. Then Bob and I (15 minutes later) went for the water again. We finally left for home around sundown, which was a little after seven. Tomorrow, we will celebrate my thirteenth birthday.
